Charles Kingsford Smith (2/6)


Sir Charles Edward Kingsford Smith, MC, AFC (9 February 1897 – 8 November 1935), frequently called by his moniker Smithy, was an early Australian pilot.

In 1928, he made the first transpacific departure from the United States to Australia. He additionally made the first relentless intersection of the Australian territory, the main flights among Australia and New Zealand, and the primary eastbound Pacific intersection from Australia to the United States; and, likewise, made a departure from Australia to London, establishing another precedent of 10.5 days.
